an acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose, marked by sneezing, lacrimation, and a profuse secretion of watery mucus; usually associated with infection by one of the common cold viruses of acute allergic rhinitis. SYN: coryza, head cold, upper respiratory infection.
