cuboidal cells connected with the squamous pulmonary alveolar cells and having in their cytoplasm lamellated bodies (cytosomes) that represent the source of the surfactant that coats the alveoli. SYN: granular pneumonocytes, type II cells, type II pneumocyte, type II pneumonocyte.
