Ion exchange resins

Synthetic resins containing an active group that gives the resin a property of combining with or exchanging ions (an atom or molecule that carries a positive or negative charge) between the resin and a solution. For example, water softening -- a form of cation exchange --, or the conversion of hard water to soft water, involves exchanging ions of calcium and magnesium present in the hard water with sodium ions present on the resin
