Trench mouth (medical condition)

A rare form of bacterial oral infection which causes inflammation and ulceration of the gums. The infection results in an excess number of the bacteria which are normally found in healthy mouths. Certain viruses may be a factor in allowing the overgrowth of these bacteria. Factors such as smoking, stress, poor nutrition and poor oral hygiene may increase the risk of the infection.
