Acetaldehyde (systematic name ethanal) is an organic chemical compound with the formula CH3CHO. [1] It is a very reactive substance. At room temperature acetaldehyde is usually found as a colourless liquid, which has a fruity smell at low concentrations and an unpleasant, pungent smell at high concentrations. It evaporates easily and is flammable. It mixes with water, alcohol and other organic (carbon-containing) solvents. Acetaldehyde is one of a group of chemicals known as the volatile organic compounds (VOCs). [1,2]
