group of peptide antibiotic agents, isolated from several species of Streptomyces (originally Actinomyces), that are active against gram positive bacteria, fungi, and neoplasms; they form complexes with DNA and therefore inhibit RNA synthesis, primarily the ribosomal type. Drug name confusion
