An alkaline earth is any element in the second column of the periodic table. These elements include beryllium (Be), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), and radium (Ra). Do not confuse this term with the word alkaline which refers to a basic substance (one with a pH greater than 7) or with alkali metal
