Alkaline reaction

(1) any test by which an alkaline reaction is recognized, such as the change of red litmus paper to blue; (2) an excess of hydroxide ions over hydrogen ions in aqueous solution as indicated by a pH value exceeding 7 (at 22°C). Cf.: dissociation constant of water SYN: basic reaction.
