Blood-brain barrier

A protective barrier between brain blood vessels and brain tissues that allows blood to flow freely to the brain but prevents most substances in the bloodstream from reaching the brain cells. It protects the brain from the effect of many harmful substances but makes it difficult to deliver drugs to the brain.
