another term for the ductus arteriosus, which is a vascular shunt between pulmonary trunk and the aortic arch. This channel degenerates to form the ligamentum arteriosum (ligamentum Botalli). In preterm infants this channel may remain open as Patent Ductus Arteriosus. Named after Leonardo Botallo an Italian surgeon in Paris (1530-1600).
