defective response of target tissues to glucocorticoids; a common acquired state frequently associated with allergic or autoimmune conditions (e.g., asthma or rheumatoid arthritis) or severe inflammatory states (e.g., respiratory distress syndrome or septic shock); also occurs as a rare genetic syndrome resulting from malfunction of glucocorticoid receptor.
