Heinz bodies

intracellular inclusions usually attached to the red blood cell membrane, composed of denatured hemoglobin; they occur in thalassemia, enzymopathies, hemoglobinopathies, and after splenectomy. Visualization of these usually requires examination of red blood cells using supravital stains or by phase microscopy.
