Red blood cell mass

the total mass of erythrocytes in circulation, reduced in anemia and increased in polycythemia. Measurement is by radioisotopic tagging and reinfusion of an aliquot of blood, followed by determination of the dilution of tagged cells in a specimen obtained after an interval of 1-3 hours.
