Z-track injection

a technique for intramuscular injection of a substance that may be irritating, or that requires strict deposition and absorption. The tissue to be injected is pulled downward in the direction of the body's midline and held during and after injection. When the tissue is released, the usually straight needle track becomes a broken line shaped like a Z, which holds the medication deep in the muscle and prevents upward seepage through the tissues along the needle track.
