rare cause of esophagitis in immunocompromised patients with hematologic malignancies complicated by severe granulocytopenia; may also occur after bone marrow transplantation, diabetic ketoacidosis, and in patients with AIDS. Characterized by difficulty swallowing, endoscopic appearance ranging from normal mucosa to ulcers associated with erythema, plaques, pseudomembranes, or hemorrhage; diagnosis confirmed by mucosal biopsy and culture.
