Bowel bypass syndrome (medical condition)

An illness that occurs in patients who have had bowel bypass surgery to treat obesity. The illness can occur days or even years after the operation. As many as a fifth of patients who undergo the operation may suffer the illness. It is believed to be caused by a build up of bacteria in a pouch in the bowel which triggers the immune system into action. See also Bowel bypass syndrome
