Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)

The location in the atmosphere along both sides of the equator at which the strong upward motion of air (Hadley cell) is characterized by heavy precipitation in convective thunderstorms and by relatively low surface pressure [Crutzen, Paul J. and T.E. Graedel. Atmospheric Change; Freeman Press, New York; 1993; p.57].
