N-formylmethionine (fMet)

Methionine acylated on the NH2 group by a formyl (-CHO) group. This is the starting amino acid residue for virtually all bacterial polypeptides. It is also observed in mitochondria and chloroplasts of eukaryotes.initiating codon.
