R744, or more commonly called CO2 or carbon dioxide, is another alternative not-in-kind refrigerant that is being considered for automotive air-conditioning. However, CO2 has several drawbacks including significantly higher pressure and lower thermodynamic efficiency. These properties necessitate significant design changes to be able to use CO2 with associated higher equipment, reliability questions, and other transition costs.
