Bleeding that occurs in dilated blood vessels that usually develop in the esophagus or stomach. The dilated blood vessels are asymptomatic unless they burst which can then become a life-threatening condition. Bleeding varices are most often caused by liver cirrhosis which increases the blood pressure in the veins that carry blood from the digestive organs to the liver. See also Variceal Bleeding
