Carotenemia, familial (medical condition)

A rare inherited metabolic disorder where an enzyme deficiency inhibits the conversion of beta carotene into vitamin A. Thus, patients have high beta carotene levels in the blood and low vitamin A levels. The condition causes intermittent orange discoloration of the face, palms and soles. Vitamin A supplements are of no benefit for this condition. See also Carotenemia, familial
