First pharyngeal arch cartilage

the cartilage in the mesenchyme of the first pharyngeal arch in the embryo from which the malleus and incus of the middle ear develop; its proximal end also gives rise to the sphenomandibular and anterior malleolar ligaments. SYN: Meckel cartilage (2).
