SOS response (genetics)

DF: An error-prone mechanism or set of functions forrepairing damaged microbial DNA. SOS functions (aconcept reputedly derived from the SOS of theinternational distress signal) are involved in DNArepair and mutagenesis, in cell divisioninhibition, in recovery of normal physiologicalconditions after DNA repair, and possibly in celldeath when DNA damage is extensive.
