WHMIS

WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a Canadian program designed to protect workers by providing them and their employers with vital information about hazardous materials. The following are key features of WHMIS: 1. Criteria to identify controlled products and to provide information about them in the workplace; 2. A cautionary labelling system for containers of controlled products; 3. Requirements for the disclosure of information by the use of material safety data sheets; 4.Worker education programs; 5. A mechanism to protect trade secrets. | WHMIS is implemented by a series of federal, provincial and territorial acts and regulations. One which is used frequently in preparing Material Safety Data Sheets is the Controlled Products Regulations (CPR).
