species found in lung lesions and secretions of humans; may cause bone and tendon-sheath lesions in rabbits; some strains are pathogenic for mice; linked to opportunistic infections in humans; not easily distinguished from Mycobacterium avium and therefore is included in the Mycobacterium avium Complex.
